For all the billions of people who read my blog /yeah right!/, sorry for the lack of updates! My new job promotion (motherhood) is keeping me happily busy. My little 7 week old boy takes up all my time, and I wouldn't have it any other way. So much has happened since the last update...let's see...
well most obviously, little boy is a total chunk now! I wish I knew how much he weighed but his cheeks say it all :) We are currently still trying to find a good pediatrician in Japan which is a rather daunting task. In all honesty, I probably know more than most of the doctors here... #ImanursesoIknowitallsyndrome
But seriously.
Also, he has started smiling a lot more and there is truly nothing. better. in. this. world. Often times Kolby will take him on a walk or to a different room, and when he sees me after being away from me he gives me the biggest open mouthed smile. I die. He finally knows who I am and I feel so special and lucky that I, of all people, get to be his momma.
He's been sleeping in his crib for a few weeks now and he does great! Many nights he sleeps 4-7 hour stretches and it's awesome. Some nights he wakes up every 3 hours, and thankfully I have Grey's Anatomy to keep me awake through those late night feedings. (how have I never seen this show?!) He usually goes to bed between 9:30 and 11, but sadly I can't seem to fall asleep before 1am, so I've gotta work on that so I get hose 2-3 extra hours of sleep! I think I just feel like I have so much to do and when he's asleep I can finally do it. He doesn't seem to believe in naps...so he's usually awake from 9am-6pm, has a small nap at 6, wakes up and eats and plays for a bit, and then goes back to bed for the night.
Kolby left on a business trip to China for 4 days and I guess I will get a taste of single parent life...he will be sorely missed! If it wasn't for him, I would probably never eat dinner. He makes me dinner most nights, cleans up messes I couldn't get to during the day, and let's me rest by taking care of Kai when he gets home from work. Super-dad right? He's a stellar husband and Kai is dang lucky to have him has a dad.
It's been hard for me to accept so much help from him though...I usually like to do everything myself and have dinner ready every night and the house spick and span, but having a newborn who eats every 1.5 hours and doesn't nap makes that kinda difficult. Little Kai is pretty calm at night and slightly fussy during the day, so he needs all my attention and I love giving him every ounce of it, no matter how many dishes pile up. But on the rare days baby boy does have a nap, I do get dinner cooked and the house clean and then I feel invincible.
It will be a lot easier when we go back to America where they have crockpots, dishwashers, dryers, and grocery stores that sell something besides meat, vegetables, and rice (that's kind of all they eat here in Japan and I am so out of dinner ideas...). But seriously, hand washing dishes, separating garbage into 5 different categories, and hanging up all of the laundry outside to dry takes up a lot more time than you would think. And free time is a rare commodity with a newborn. Living in a foreign country without a car has been a challenge but we are hoping to move back home soon :)
Overall, life is the best it has ever been. Funny how that coincides with also being the most sleepless...but hands down the best. I remember my professor in my Childhood Development class showing a graph of married couples' happiness levels...and he explained that couples generally rank their happiness much lower after having children and divorce rates are higher because of stress and lack of sleep and new responsibilities. However, I couldn't disagree more! Yes it's rough, and sometimes we don't eat or sleep, and Kolby has to help a lot even after a long day at work, but we never think of our baby as a task or job or nuisance, even when he's crying that sweet little cry...he's a precious baby boy, our baby boy, that we sincerely LOVE taking care of. We are so much happier than we have ever been...hands down! We can't imagine life without him, and we can't remember what we filled our time with before he came along.
Kai was blessed last Sunday at church and it was a special experience. I am so grateful that families are forever. To learn more about my church and my beliefs, click here
Kai has completely stolen our hearts and we fall more in love with him everyday.
We love you Kai!
