12 THINGS

Gosh these two just kill me! I've said it 1000 times and I'll say it once again, I am the luckiest mama in the whole world.

So 12 random things right now...

1. I finally fit in my pre-pregnancy jeans and am back to my old weight, so all is well in the world.
2. I've only got 2 more weeks of working full-time, and then I get to be back at home with my favoritest people all day!
3. I got the best text ever from my mom this week saying that we are planning a family trip to Hawaii in June to visit my grandparents. YAY!!! Kai, Presley, and Kolby can finally meet my cute Japanese grandma!!
4. I get temporarily depressed when the cold suddenly hits and summer is over. Can we move to Hawaii....
5. Can The Bachelor just start yet?!! I'm dying over here.
6. I don't know what it is about my baby girl lately but I just wanna hold her all day long and never let go. I can't wait to experience life with her.
7. I usually end the day with a big (we're talking 3 cups) bowl of French Silk Kroger brand ice cream. It's the creamiest most delicious ice cream ever!
8. Does anyone else think Mike Posner's song "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" sounds exactly like Savage Garden?!
9. One thing I do love about fall is all of the yummy soups I get to make...with copious amounts of bread to go with them :) Creamy tomato tortellini soup, broccoli cheese soup...GIMME ALL THE SOUP!
10. I'm one of those people who LOVES Halloween. My husband HATES it. But I still make us dress up every year :) I am getting some things together for our costumes and pretty excited! I found some great stuff at the thrift store this weekend and am SO excited to be my favorite character ever! I'm also so so excited to take Kai trick-or-treating! This will be his first time doing it and I know he will love it. I might love it more though ;) #immakidatheart
11. I found a Cars Lightning Mcqueen backpack for Kai and he loves it. He wears it whenever we go somewhere and it's just the cutest!
12. Last Fall we went to Banff, Canada when I was pregnant with Pres. We had a blast and I'm dying to go back. I can't believe Pres was a tiny thing in my belly a year ago! And that Kai had just started walking and was the cutest little 1 year old...I wanna go back in time. Looking through these pics from 1 year ago makes me want to book a trip back there right now.

SO LONG SWEET SUMMER

If you can tell me the song that inspired the title of this post, then you are my kind of folk :)

It's the end of summer and I feel like we didn't do enough hiking and exploring (but then again can you ever do enough?)

Here are some of our summer highlights:

-our week in Hawaii with Kai, exploring the jungle and laying on the beach
-hiking to the hot pots twice
-time with family in Texas
-hiking Mt. Timp
-lots of days spent at the park

It may not be as an adventurous summer as I had hoped, but Kai and Pres are still little and it's hard to hike with TWO of them. We sure tried though! We might do a little trip to Zion's national park when I finish my work training, if I can talk Kolby into it ;)

I'm just finishing my third week (out of 6) weeks working full time and things are crazier than ever, hence why I've been so awol lately.  I can't wait until I'm only working 1 shift a week and can spend time with my little loves all day at home.

Kai is starting to put little sentences together and copying a lot of words we say. Today he said "watch Dora mama". (watch Dora with mama). He is obsessed with Dora the Explorer and gets SO excited when I put it on. He sings along to the theme song and it's pretty dang cute.

Pres is almost 8 months old and I think she's teething because she drools a ton and loves to chew on things, especially this Nuby pacifier! If your babies won't take a pacifier and you want them to, I recommend trying this one because it's a different shape than most of the other brands out there. It also makes a great chew toy for babies...Pres seriously loves to chew on it all day. It's silicone and BPA-free. It also has a space in it where you can attach a pacifier clip. YAY for good pacifiers!!

NURSE BY DAY, MAMA BY NIGHT

Even though I love staying at home with my babies more than anything in the world, sometimes I get a little stir-crazy at home with them and my brain craves a little intellectualism. I'm always keeping an eye out for nursing jobs that would work with my REAL job, which is being a mom. And I think I found one!

I already work a few hours a week for a home health company, and now I'm starting a new job as a nurse case manager at the hospital, which I'm so excited about. I was shocked when I got the job offer and can't wait to get back in the hospital setting and live my Grey's Anatomy fantasy...haha just kidding, but really I'm excited to be back doing my nurse thing. And the extra income doesn't hurt :) I have to train  full time for 6 weeks, and then after that I can pick up shifts whenever I want, and I plan to work 1 day a week when Kolby can stay home with the kids. It's perfect!

These last few days of working and starting my new job have been chaos. For all you mamas who work full time and have babies and somehow stay sane, I don't know how you do it! Major props. I miss Kai and Pres so dang much while I work! My job will always come second to them. They will always come first in my life, they are my everything!

My babies are growing too fast and the only way I know how to cope with it is by taking a million pictures of them. Here's a few we snapped on our walk the other day while visiting a friend: (still can't figure out why they look so blurry when I upload them to this blog :(

He was so interested in this tiny little stick...I love that he makes me stop and notice the small simple things in life!

KAI'S 2ND BIRTHDAY, CONSTRUCTION VEHICLE THEME

My baby boy is 2 years old. It hurts to type those words out! My sweet little baby who made me a mama is a whole 2 years old. I would love so much to turn back time and live the pregnancy with him and the first few weeks after his birth over and over (minus all of the horrible recovery pain). That was such a special time with him in Tokyo (where he was born) and it was by far one of the happiest times of my life.

We had fun throwing him a little party at the park with family. We ordered pizza (his favorite food). And of course I had to make it a construction vehicle theme ("Kai is digging being 2") because there's nothing he loves more than excavators or "aduh la duh la" as he calls them. Gosh we love him!

My favorite part of the party was the cake. It turned out AWESOME. I found a picture of it on pinterest and tried to make one exactly like it, and we succeeded! I say we because my husband did half of it. I came home from doing errands and he had half of it baked and frosted perfectly. He secretly loves baking and is freakishly good at it!

His birthday fell on a Sunday so we decided to celebrate it the next day. But of course we still had to do some celebrating on Sunday so I snuck in while he was sleeping and put up Cars decorations and balloons in his room. We sang to him that night at a ward friend's house too.

This boy definitely has an obsession with cupcakes. He kept seeing it in the fridge and asking for it over and over again. He's just like his mama...ha.

Now for the party pics! I should never be in charge of pictures because we didn't end up taking any with family who came. I was too busy making sure the party ran smoothly and keeping an eye on Kai at the park,  woopsies. We were missing quite a few family members so it was just a small group but it was fun to have some cousins, nana and grandpa Bradley, and grandma and grandpa great. So fun to see my own grandparents love Kai so much and spend so much time with him. (My grandma is a huge help and watches him all the time! He loves her so much).

I found this on amazon and how could I not buy it?!

Once he opened this gift he was a goner. He didn't set it down the rest of the night!

Don't mess with this kid and his pizza.

I looked over at one point and Kai was feeding Presley watermelon. It was the cutest thing ever and she loved it, until she choked on a little bit and I had to intervene lol.

How cute is he reading this card?!

So this is the saddest thing ever but when we got home that night, I realized Kai hadn't gotten any cake. How this happened, I don't know but we quickly fixed that and gave him a a big piece right before bed. He loved it! I'm sure he won't remember any of this party but I hope he felt special and loved. We love you so much Kai-guy and are so proud of the little man you have become in 2 short years!

LAST KAI UPDATE AS A 1 YEAR OLD

This is my baby boy's last update as a 1 year old. In less than 1 week he will be TWO YEARS OLD, so I've gotta squeeze in one last rant about how much I love my forever BABY boy.

Aw but who am I kidding, he's so not a baby anymore. He is a full grown toddler. 100% determined, stubborn, passionate toddler. And the cutest one at that.

I usually do a list of likes and dislikes, but I'm just gonna write whatever comes to mind right now. I  think anyone who knows Kai would agree that his number one  favorite thing of all time right now is excavators. He has such a cute way of saying it, it kills me! He says something like "A-DOO-LAH-DOO-LAH!"any time he sees one. He first learned about them from a youtube video with a guy named Blippi who makes kids videos about trucks, planes, the alphabet, and lots of other toddler stuff. There's even a catchy little song that goes "I'm an excavatorrrr. Hey dirt! see ya laterrrr." Don't ever listen to it or you'll never stop singing it. Trust me.

Anyways,  that's where the obsession started. He loves all things that go: cars, trains, planes, trucks, you name it. He loves the movie Cars. I almost planned a Cars themed birthday, but his heart is really with excavators. He would love to just play in the dirt all day with one.

He's still trying to figure out how to talk, but here's a few words he can say:

apple
car "cah"
dirt
ice
uncle
this "deesh"
owl
Kai
mama
yeah
no
mmhmm
dada
byebye
up
water "wa wa"
apple juice "abb doo doo"
hat "ha"
watermelon "muh muh muh"
hamburger "um nuh na"
ice cream "ahm-noo"
excavator "ah-doo-lah-doo-lah"
milk "mah"
ipad "abb doo"
firework "wa wa wa"
binky "ba ba"

I know the list isn't where it should be, but I can tell his language is coming and I'm not worried :) He also just started using possessives, he will point at my drink and say "mama's!" He talks all day long, but it's usually his own little language. I love it. Plus he makes up for lack of words by singing all day. He started singing recognizable songs when he was about 21 months. This kid sings and sings and sings, especially when we are in the car. It is THE cutest thing ever, and I've never heard a kid sing so much. His main songs are the alphabet song and the one that goes "daddy finger daddy finger where are you...here i am here i am how do you do." He also will often just sing his own thing. It's so sweet and makes my mama heart melt.

He still gets so giddy and excited when he sees the temple. Can I just say, there is nothing cuter than a little boy who loves the temple.

He would watch the ipad for hours if I let him, so I have to be really careful. It's tempting sometimes to just throw him in front of the ipad so I can get things done, but I really don't want him to be a technology addict so I've really been limiting his screen time.

His favorite people are his nana, grandma bear, and grandma great. He loves them so much!

He's a very picky eater, and a complete sugar addict. Not sure how to fix this! He hates all meat. He hates eating things that aren't a smooth texture. For example, if there's toppings on a pizza, he will pick them off. If there's vegetables in an omlette, he will spit those out. He likes things very plain and simple I guess. The other night he ate two whole oranges, which I was pretty happy about. He'll usually always eat bananas, grapes, and oranges for me. He eats a lot of grilled cheese because it's one of the only things he will eat for me that doesn't have large amounts of sugar! Oh and pizza. He LOVES pizza. Hence why we are having pizza at his birthday :)

He's pretty obsessed with ice cream too and points out cream cones everywhere we go ("ahm-noo! ahm-noo!"). I've been sneaking some veggies in a spinach smoothie a few times a week. It's one of the only healthy things he will eat! I put carrots, spinach, strawberries, bananas, ground flax seed, greek yogurt, and almond milk in it so I'll have to post the recipe soon because he loves it. He also can't ever have enough milk. He would drink 6 cups a day if I let him. We are trying to work on that and keep it less than 2.5 cups but it's so hard because he hates water and asks for milk allll dayyy long.

For a few weeks he had a hard time going in his car seat because all he wanted to do was drive the car. He gets the biggest smile on his face when he makes it up to the driver's seat and pretends to drive.

He is very independent and loves to do EVERYthing on his own. He gets very upset and angry if we try to help feed him in any way or help him with certain things.

He is the best older brother (except for the time he tried to poke her eye with a stick). When she's screaming, which she's doing more often than not these days, he will put her binky in her mouth or give her a toy. He kisses her any time I ask him to. And often without asking too. It's the sweetest.

He used to sleep straight from 10:30pm-10:30 ish am until the last few weeks. He's started waking up crying early every morning, and sometimes in the middle of the night, I think when he loses his binky. That might be going away though. He has slept perfectly the last few nights/mornings! We do need to move his bed time earlier though. He usually has a good 2 hour nap everyday from 3-5pm ish, which we will try to move to 1:30-3:30.

Unfortunately, he is a full fledged binky addict. Yikes! There was a point where he never asked for it during the day unless he saw it, but now he asks for it ALL day long. I'm not too happy about it, but when I try to keep it from him it just ends in tantrums and fits that I don't have time/energy for with Presley always crying these days. So we will work on binky weaning with Kai once Presley is more stable...lol. She's a little demanding right now. Love her though!

He drinks his tub water like it's liquid gold. I don't get it! He refuses to drink water when I offer it to him, but loves his gross tub water...

He's got the cutest little thinking face. When you ask him a question, he gets this look like he is so deep in thought. I can't explain it but it's just the cutest thing ever.

We've started a nightly routine now where we get his jammies on, brush his teeth, talk about his day, read some books, pray, and then sing "I love to see the temple." He loves it and it's my favorite time of the day with him. I love seeing him fold his arms when we pray. Gosh he's the sweetest!

I love him so much I really can't put it into words. I am so proud of him and everything he's become in just 2 years. He is the best little bud I could have ever asked for.

We love you so much Kai!

SWIG SUGAR COOKIES

So apparently Swig sugar cookies are epic? I finally tried one a few weeks ago and was not impressed. There was almost no frosting, and it was flat without those signature rough edges. I think Swig has changed things recently and they just aren't as good as they used to be.

So why did I make them? Because I was on the quest for the world's best sugar cookie. Which I was lucky enough to eat, on a Mother's Day Sunday at church. Someone made them for all the moms at our church, and they were beyond perfect. I talked about that cookie for the next month. I tried to figure out who had made them so I could get the recipe, but never was able to. So I did what any cookie-recipe-craving girl would do in that moment...pinterest. And it led me right to this recipe. I texted a catering business friend and asked for her best recipe, and it happened to be this exact one I found on pinterest, so I decided to give it a go!

And not to get ahead of myself or anything, but they are pretty freaking delicious. Hashtag: eat your heart out SWIG.

So here you go! I made a few small alterations but it was for the better :)

SWIG SUGAR COOKIES:
1 cup butter (room temperature)
3/4 cup canola oil
1 1/4 cup sugar + 1/4 cup to dip the glass in
3/4 cup powdered sugar
2 T water
2 eggs
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cream of tarter
1 tsp salt
5 1/2 cup flour

The frosting recipe is farther down below :)

1. Cream together butter, canola oil, water, eggs, and sugar(both granulated and powdered)
2. Combine dry ingredients and slowly add to butter mixture
3. Mix until everything is combined, but don't overmix. Your dough shouldn't be really sticky. If it is, add a little more flour.
4. Roll into golf-sized balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet (you could also try a larger size ball for a thicker cookie)
5. Now to get the signature rough edge look: Put 1/4 cup sugar and a pinch of salt in a dish. Take the bottom of a glass and dip the class in it, then press it onto the cookie until a ridge forms, re-dipping the glass before each cookie.
6. Bake at 350 for 6-8 minutes. DO NOT LET THEM OVERBAKE. I did mine for only 6 minutes and that was the perfect amount of time. You have to watch them like a hawk because if they cook too long they will get hard and dry.
7. Let them cool off, then put them in the fridge. I left mine in the fridge overnight and frosted them in the morning. Something about a cool cookie on a hot summer day just tastes so good.

Now for the FROSTING:

I did sour cream frosting. You could try a cream cheese frosting if you prefer that, or whatever floats your frosting boat. I like this sour cream one though. It made way too much frosting and I'm not complaining. But if you want less frosting, you could try a little less of each ingredient.

1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup sour cream (or a little less if you want)
1 to 1.5 ish lbs of powdered sugar (I used most of the standard 2 lb bag)
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup milk
Red food coloring
Cream together the butter, sour cream, and salt.  Slowly add powdered sugar.  When it gets too thick to be frosting, add the milk.  Alternate this process until your frosting is the consistency you want. I kept tasting mine until it was just right:)  Add 1 drop of red food coloring give it a good stir.
Keep the cookies in a sealed container in the fridge until they are ready to serve.  I think half the reason these are so magical is that they're COLD.  I also kept the frosting in the fridge all night, but if you like your frosting room temperature then don't make it until you are ready to frost. I am wondering though...because the frosting has sour cream do the cookies and frosting always need to stay in the fridge? I don't know but I kept mine in the fridge for over a day and they tasted great.
This recipe was adapted from this one.
If you're lucky, you'll have a bright-eyed little toddler staring at you with frosting on his mouth begging for another taste. Gosh he's the cutest! He even helped me make them, and I think that's the real reason they turned out so dang good.

A MAMA'S FIRST 911 CALL

Well, I didn't even make it 2 years as a mom without a 911 phone call.

So here's the story....

I left the stroller parked outside next to our car in the parking lot overnight (we live in an apartment complex) because it's too heavy for me to lift into the trunk. I meant to tell Kolby to run downstairs and put it in the car, but I forgot. The next morning around 11:00 am I realized this and panicked. I called Kolby at work and said "Did you see the stroller by the car?? Did you put it in the trunk? Or did someone steal it??"

He said he didn't see any stroller, so I started sobbing thinking someone had stolen it. It was over $200 and I loved it. I wanted to hurry and run down to the parking lot just to make sure it wasn't still there or maybe someone had moved it somewhere else...so I left Kai in the apartment while I ran downstairs to look for it. I know I shouldn't leave a toddler in an apartment unsupervised, but I only planned to be gone 30 seconds and I couldn't carry him down with me since I had Presley. And if I let him walk down with me...well he would just throw a fit and try to run away while we were outside like he always does...and if you've ever tried chasing a very determined toddler in a busy parking lot while holding a baby, it just ain't pretty. So yes, I'm a bad mom and shouldn't have left him in the apartment, but I was desperate to see if my stroller was for sure stolen.

I went downstairs, and there it was, parked next to the car. PHEW! I don't know how Kolby missed it, but oh well, I was so relieved it wasn't gone! I hurried back upstairs, and I had been gone less than a minute. When I left, Kai had been crying at the door. Usually he will stay there crying until I come back. I hadn't locked the door this time when I ran downstairs because I was in such a hurry and had Presley in my arms, and Kai can't open doors.

So I walk into the apartment, and it's just dead silence. Which is VERY unusual for Kai. Usually he runs up to me as soon as I walk in...or  I can hear him playing in the house somewhere. But not this time. Seriously it was dead silence. I ran to his room, and he wasn't in there. I ran to the living room and kitchen, he wasn't there either. I was starting to panic. We have a very small apartment, and it only takes about 15 seconds to do a full sweep. The last place to check was my bedroom/bathroom. I had shut the bathroom door before I left, so he couldn't be in there (because he can't open doors). But nope, he wasn't in my room. At this point I was frantically yelling KAI!! KAI!!! KAI!!. No response. Usually he will laugh or giggles or make some kind of noise when I yell his name. Still, nothing but dead silence. At this point I was in full fledge PANIC mode.

Only 1 of 2 things could have happened...either he got out of the house because I hadn't locked the door, (but he wouldn't have gotten farther than the stairs, because I was only gone 1 minute and it takes him 2 minutes to go down the stairs...) OR someone had come and taken him out of the apartment. My mind immediately jumped to option #2, because #1 really was impossible. Someone, (a child sex trafficker in my mind) must have been watching me, waiting for the right moment, and ran in and snatched him before I went back upstairs.

I was on the phone with Kolby at the time, giving him good news about the stroller. I immediately yelled KAI IS NOT HERE! KAI IS GONE! Finally he told me to hang up and call 911. I did, and could barely breathe as I said, "Someone came into my apartment and took my son." I gave them my address and explained how I had run downstairs and came back to an empty apartment with my son missing.

"Are you sure you checked everywhere?" she said. "Under beds, in closets..?"

"YES!" I replied.

She kept asking questions, and I'm over here like GET THE POLICE HERE BEFORE THE GUY GETS TOO FAR!!

All I can say is that it felt like a horrible nightmare.

I ran outside, looking everywhere and hoping maybe he had just wandered out and I would find him in the parking lot or in the yard area. It was also dead quiet outside, and no signs of Kai.

"Is there any water nearby he could have gone to?"  the 911 person asked. They were worried about him drowning.

Thankfully the answer to that was no. But we do live by a very very busy street where people frequently go 60mph.

I felt sick to my stomach. This could not be happening to me.

After sweeping the outside area well (while on the phone with the 911 person), I felt like there was no way he was out there. He couldn't have gotten far and I would have found him by now. So he HAD to have been kidnapped from the apartment. There was no other explanation. I ran back upstairs to the apartment, hoping with all of my heart that he would appear out of thin air. But I was 90% convinced that he was kidnapped, which is literally the WORST feeling in the world. It really doesn't get worse than that, not knowing what creep took your kid and what's happening to him.

At some point I realized I hadn't actually looked in our bathroom because A) i swear i had shut the door and he can't open doors and B) i had listened really quick earlier for any sound in there and hadn't heard anything in there.

I tried to open the bathroom door, my very last hope of finding him, and...

it was locked!

I definitely hadn't locked it. He must be in there, and he must have locked it from the inside! I picked the lock, busted the door open, and there he was sitting on the floor giggling.

I have never ever felt so relieved in my life.

Feeling extremely embarrassed, I told the 911 person that I had just found him.

"Ok, I'll call back the officer that was on his way then," she said.

I was still trying to catch my breath and let my mind soak in the fact that Kai was here, he was in my arms, and he wasn't TAKEN. I felt like the dumbest mom in the world. For one, because I had left him in an unlocked apartment while I ran downstairs (even though it was less than a minute) and two, because I had been hysterical on the phone with 911, convinced that a sex trafficker had taken my child.

For all of you moms reading this and cringing at the fact that I left him alone in the apartment...I seriously wouldn't do this with most kids, even for 30 seconds, but Kai is different. He doesn't really pull open drawers and get into stuff and climb on things. He's a pretty simple kid and mostly only touches his toys. And our apartment is almost 100% toddler proof. Was it still wrong? Yes. I know. I've done it a few times when I check the mail, but I always lock the door and usually I only do it when he's in his high chair or something. But I won't be doing it anymore.

And why did my mind jump to "a child sex trafficker must have kidnapped him"?

Because of all those articles I've been seeing on facebook lately. Apparently Utah is one of the most targeted states, and there have been some local stories that have really freaked me out. I get paranoid even going to the grocery store and don't take my eyes off of him. I'm also very careful about which parks I go to, and I try to always go with someone. I hate that we live in a world where I have to worry about this so much, but it is what it is and I think it's good to be fully aware and not naive.

So, I was reunited with boy, and all is good. I might not leave his side ever again though.
